Instead of getting to my To Do list, I decided to RENOVATE our living room!

I woke up Saturday morning with an endless list of chores to do, to get ready for our friend's Sara and Carl to come for a visit this coming Thursday. I think I wasted a couple hours in front of the TV stressing about how much needed to be done. I finally got dressed and went out to the garage to gather the weed-eater, gloves, shovel, rake and extension cord...to weed-eat the lawn (again). Once I had all the shit together out back, I figured I better enjoy a smoke before I begin this horrendous chore. As I sat in my hammock my belly said it was lunch time (anything to put off this back aching process). I made myself a delicious cordon bleu wrap and watched some good ol' HGTV while I ate.

This is me digressing....Jory and I have talked about (I may have even blogged about it, but I'm too lazy to go check) pulling up the carpet in our living room and putting in tile. It helps keep the house more cool in the summer, but more importantly the carpet the builder put in is the cheapest carpet on the planet. When we first moved in, we kenneled Jimi and let Mazzy run wild while we were at work. For whatever reason Mazzy would piss all over the carpet in front of the door. We figured she was stressed because of the move and she'd get over it. Meanwhile I'm shampooing the carpet every fucking weekend and the stains won't go away. After trying several different cleaner brands, we simply gave up and figured we'd have to tile sooner rather then later. With the recent influx of visitors, I've told Jory I wanted to pull the carpet up and have bare concrete rather then having people come see dog piss alley. All along Jory has argued there would be plywood under the carpet, I disagreed and said there would only be concrete. This house has no basement, so there would be no reason for plywood, the builders would have just thrown down the concrete slab and built on it. I've threatened to pull the carpet up in the corner to see who's right but never followed through.

Back to where I left off...I took my lunch dishes in the kitchen, turned and stared at the corner of the entry way. You can tell I really didn't want to weed-eat, huh? So I grab some pliers and walk over to the corner. Jory notices what I'm doing and gives me the "go ahead" nod. I pull on the corner of the carpet and TADA...I'm right! Jory surprised me by saying I could pull it up if I want. WHAT? HELL YA! So without further ado...

As per usual, I didn't take a BEFORE picture.

Here's the best I could do...

It only took a few minutes to cut and pull it up.

There's no going back now!

I even got Jory to help!

While cleaning the tiny bit of glue I realized I didn't have all the tools I needed to do what I wanted...so it was off to Home Depot. Three hours later we left the Home Depot and the lights and sky were so beautiful so I took this....

After eating dinner I scrubbed and mopped the concrete, even had the mop bucket explode causing a near flood. After a couple hours of drying, I finally finished painting at 3:30 AM.

The builder had left us touch up paint, I figured the floor would look better painted then leaving it bare. Now I just want to pull the rest of the carpet up and throw a rug down, but I have too many other things left to do, like Clean my house and weed-eat my backyard!

Three Years

Last Friday I came back into work after lunch to find two delicious looking pieces of pie with a note telling me to pick one and Happy 3rd Anniversary (with the company I work for). I chose the Artesian Triple Chocolate Mousse, it was scrumptious! Thanks Deb!

Earth Hour

I was happy to see Phoenix is among four cities in the US participating in the worldwide "Earth Hour" observance sponsored by World Wildlife Fund. From 8 PM to 9 PM Saturday (TOMORROW!), the city will turn off power to all downtown buildings run by the city. Several businesses and neighborhoods are also going dark.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is encouraging everyone in the city to take part.
"Not only turn off the lights, but go on outside -- in the front yard or the back yard, go with your neighbors and look at the stars," Gordon said. "And then at 9:01, start watching as the lights start coming back on. That will hit your heart and you will know that you can make a difference."

So I'm challenging you TOO to power off those computers, laptops, video game consoles and lights. As Phil said, go outside and enjoy the stars. Have kids? Show them the different constellations. Too cold? Tell ghost stories around the fireplace or candles. Make a list of things you can do to conserve energy and actually make some of those changes starting now.

I'll be climbing on our roof to star gaze and talk to Jack(His star is part of the Big Dipper). Hopefully I'll be able to see the lights come back on in Phoenix at 9, we might live too far away.

"One Person can make a difference. Cities, coming together, can change the world."

We've been replacing our light bulbs with CFL's. What are you doing to conserve?

Making our back patio even more enjoyable!

We bought these hammock chairs at the Mesa Market Place (2 for $110 + no tax) while the parentals were in town the weekend before last. And this last weekend we picked up pillows to add more stability and/or comfort but these are so damn comfortable I really can't tell the difference. Last Thursday after band practice Keara and I 'hung' out in the hammocks all night into the early morning (5am) chatting like little girls at a slumber party. It was a blast!

ps Cleaning off the patio is on the ever growing list of To-Do's.

If you..BLANK...You live in Utah!

THIS IS WHAT JEFF FOXWORTHY HAD TO SAY ABOUT UTAHNS!

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in Utah.
If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in Utah
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed the wrong number, you live in Utah.
If 'vacation' means going anywhere south of Salt Lake City for the weekend, you live in Utah.
If you measure distance in hours, you live in Utah.
If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live in Utah.
If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' and back again in the same day, you live in Utah.
If you install security lights on your house and garage but leave both unlocked, you live in Utah.
If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in Utah.
If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you live in Utah.
If the speed limit on the highway is 75 mph -- you're going 80, and everyone is still passing you, you live in Utah.
If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you live in Utah.
If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you live in Utah.
If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly' you live in Utah.
If you actually understand these jokes and forward them to all your friends, you live in Utah.

Thanks Mom!

Been in a Fog

Not sure if this fog started because my work week was screwed up last week, I traded my Friday for their Sunday. So I only had 1 day off with Jory or if it was Easter. Being Atheists, I'm not even sure if we'll be celebrating Easter with our future kids. It seems silly to celebrate just the bunny and eggs side of it, although that's pretty much how we celebrated it growing up, it never had anything to do with Jesus in our house. I don't know why I would feel bad not celebrating it...another damn holiday based around candy and chocolate? I mean Halloween was just 5 months ago, shouldn't they still have candy left over? I always did.

It's just another damn holiday without Jack. I can picture him waddling around the back yard in his Easter outfit one of his Grandmas would have bought him, sucking on every colored egg he finds, carrying or pulling around a giant basket partially filled with eggs as another one bounces out with every fumbling step.

I woke up to Happy Easter text messages from a few people and continued to be asked how my Easter was as I sat at work taking calls from the retarded folk who have forgot their password, yet again. I'd say, "well I'm working, so I'm sure you can imagine how it's going."

I know people don't think about holidays being hard for us anymore, they've moved on with life. We've tried, it's not easy. The more I try to move on, the further I float down denial river. I've been planning on going to therapy and or group meetings ever since Jack died, but it's DOING IT that is hard. Doing things that have to be done are near impossible. If you dropped by our house without notice, I wouldn't let you inside. You might commit the two of us to the psych ward. Our house is a fucking mess. We moved in last June, I still haven't unpacked half of our shit. There's no decorations up, nothing. There's only two things we get done consistently, laundry and go to work.

I don't know why I'm confessing this now...it's been troubling me forever. The only time our house has been really cleaned is when we're expecting company, that's three times in 10 months. It's gross, I know! I just can't seem to find the energy or will to do it.

Sending holiday cards out was a total bust. I should have known, it's been 1 year, 6 months, 3 weeks and 3 days since Jack died and I still haven't sent out his birth/death announcements. The more I put it off, the more I feel like it's too late. I'll just be bringing people down by sending them. But I want to send them, I want the people I love to have a little something to remember Jack by even if it gets lost at the bottom of a shoe box in the back of someone's closet.

I told my brother Christopher I'd send him a gift card so he could go buy his baby Haiden a new car seat...WHY can't I just go out and get it done? Christmas for family...never got around to it. I know we're shitty people. I keep making goals for myself....I will send a card if not a gift and a card for all family member's birthdays this year. I've only met 1 out of 4 so far this year!

I don't know why I even make promises to people anymore...whatever it is, it's going to be late.

I've even started celebrating when I get something done, it's a HUGE accomplishment to me and it shouldn't be.

I just miss Jack. I can't put into words the pain I feel in my heart for him. I can't type the words without tears streaming from my eyes...and I'm at work, at my desk and my coworkers pretend not to see it.

I'm falling apart. And I don't have the energy to do anything about it.

Self Portrait Truthiness

Unedited Honesty on the Internet, Why not?

While perusing blogs the other day, I was a tiny bit shocked to see SarcasticMom aka Lotus took a photo of herself moments after waking up, still in bed, no make-up or hair brushed, no primping of any kind. She got the idea from Sweetney who created a Flickr Group and challenged others to show their "Truthiness".

I like a challenge.

So I take it...I wake up, stumble to the back door to let the dogs out, grab my camera and wander in the bathroom. Not sure why I went in the bathroom other then I was thinking I have crap in my eyes, everything is a little blurry I wish I could wash my face but I want to be honest and show you the true horror of me in the morning without washing my face or pulling my hair up in a twisty half bun, half curly puff tail. I don't wear make-up, I don't "do" my hair.

This is me.

Dark Puffy Eyes. Pillow wrinkle or is it crease on my cheek.

The big picture.
No I'm not naked, my hair is covering my tank top.
My FULL truth...I'm going bald.
You see it don't you? You know you do!

Strange view...doesn't really look like me to me.
Freckles, Moles and Crooked Nose.

There you have it, my Truthiness.
The Real truth, I pretty much look like this all day long.

It doesn't matter that obstacles have previously prevented you from moving forward according to your dream. Everything is changing, so don't let any of your recent self-doubt get in the way.

HOW TO DRIVE IN PHOENIX

As seen on Best Of Craigslist: Phoenix.....I'm totally stealing this idea from Cody.
And because I'm an ass, you'll find my corrections and additions in red bold.

HOW TO DRIVE IN PHOENIX:
1. You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it is: FEE-NICKS'. There are other names to learn such as Ahwatukee (Ah-wa-Too-Kee), Tucson (Too Saun), Prescott (Press cut), Tempe (Tem Pee) and my favorite Scottsdale (SNOTS dale...he he) but that will be included in the advanced course.

2. The morning rush hour is from 5:00 am to noon. The evening rush hour is from noon to 7:00 pm. Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday morning.

3. The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 85 mph. On Loop 101, your speed is expected to at least match the highway number. Anything less is considered 'Wussy'.

4. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Phoenix has its own version of traffic rules. For example, cars/trucks with the loudest muffler go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second. However, East Valley, SUV-driving, cell phone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way.

5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out, and possibly shot.

6. Never honk at anyone. Ever. Seriously. It's another offense that can get you shot.

7. Road construction is permanent and continuous in Phoenix. Detour barrels are moved around and roads are closed for your entertainment pleasure during the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting.

8. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, cops , skunks, dogs, barrels, cones, cows, horses, cats, mattresses, shredded tires, squirrels, rabbits, crows, vultures, javelinas, roadrunners, and the coyotes feeding on any of these items.

9. Maricopa Freeway, Papago Freeway and the 'I-10' are the same road.
Superstition FWY and the US 60 are the same.
SR 51 is also known as Piestewa Freeway which used to be and sometimes still is called Squaw Peak Parkway but Squaw is regarded as a derogatory term for Native American women, so they named it after Lori Piestewa a Native American who died in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
SR 143 and Hohokam Expressway are the same road.
Loop 101 is also called Agua Fria FWY, Pima FWY and Price FWY...Seriously!
SR202 is the same road as The Red Mountain FWY, the Santan FWY and when it's finished will be called the Loop 202.
Dunlap and Olive are the same street too.
Jefferson becomes Washington, but they are not the same street.
SR 101 is also the Pima FWY except west of I-17, which is also The Black Canyon FWY, as well as the Maricopa Freeway (yup the same as the I-10) and The Veterans Memorial HWY. Lastly, Thunderbird Rd. becomes Cactus Rd. but, Cactus Rd. doesn't become Thunderbird Rd. because it dead ends at a mountain.

10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them to the shoulder immediately to let them know it has been 'accidentally activated.

11. If you are in the left lane and only driving 70 in a 55-65 mph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be 'flipped off' accordingly. If you return the flip, you'll be shot.

12. For summer driving, it is advisable to wear potholders on your hands.

Serenity 10 Minutes Away

Last weekend I had learned there was a lake 20 minutes away from my house. I was astonished! How did I not know this? I thought this lake in particular was 2 hours from here but obviously I was wrong. Saturday afternoon came around and I was bored off my rocker. Jory was napping and I was going crazy with cabin fever so I decided to pack up the dogs and go for a drive.
I was shocked to be in the mountains within 7 minutes and 3 minutes later I arrived here (see picture above). I figured I had another 10 minutes to drive and I wanted to get some pictures in while the sunlight was still perfect. There was a parking lot with bathrooms and a picnic area so I pulled over. I took my first shot and my camera died! ARGH it eats through batteries like crazy! I walked the dogs around, taking in the view and decided to get on my way.
On the way back to the car I felt the leash get tight so I turned and realized Mazzy was pooping ;) OOPS sorry sweetie...so I waited. I don't normally find my dog pooping fascinating enough to write about but it's an important part of the rest of the story.
I continue up the canyon and in 5 minutes I see the turn off for the lake. I'm sure the time frame means nothing to you, but I grew up 5 minutes away from Logan Canyon (in the Rocky Mountains) and living in Salt Lake for 6 or 7 years really killed me because it was at least 30 minutes to enter any canyon and you can't just pull over where ever you want and get lost in the woods like I could in Logan. I need to be able to escape to nature and regenerate without packing a lunch and filling the tank with gas. Having this canyon so close energizes my spirit. I love Phoenix but my hippie heart needs the fresh mountain air once in a while to keep it pumping. For me, it's something to look forward to every weekend. I need that "something" to get me through the week.
So I arrive at the lake, pull in the parking lot and decide just to park here because the sun is going to set soon. No need to drive around looking for Jason Vorhees in the dark! I grab the dog's leashes as they both jump on my lap and there laughing in my face is a poo nugget smashed on the end of Mazzy's leash! WHY didn't I check her ass after she pooped at the last stop? WTF Self?
This is what we do at our house...we have to check their bums after they poop because it's possible they have a poo pellet stuck on their butt. Doesn't everyone have to do this? ;) I'm kidding...of course no one else has to do this. They have normal dogs that go poop and get all the poop out, but our dogs are special it's part of being a Johnson, having poop issues.
SO I know there is no way I can manage to walk around the lake and not accidentally slip and grab the pooped end of the leash. I was totally defeated. I turned the car back on and left.
The story is so not over...On our way back home, driving at dusk I'm squinting to see the curvy roller coaster road and I realize Jimi's standing up. I don't want her fall or get hurt so I kept telling her to sit and I'm all pushing on her butt SIT JIMI SIT! I turn back to the road for a second then realize she's puking all over the front seat! OHMYGOD Seriously! Poor girl, she's standing in her vomit, Mazzy's doing everything she can to avoid touching that nastiness. As I'm searching for a place to pull over, Mazzy is giving me this look of horror so I pick her up and drop her in the back seat. Jimi continues to throw up and she's got this phlegm boogery vomit stuck to her back legs that's making me dry heave! I finally pull over, grab Jory's spare shirt from the back seat and carefully lift Jimi up and place the shirt under her and over the vomit. I wiped away the phlegm thing and she jumped in my lap, getting oh so gross puke on me...BLAH!
I finally got her to lay down and we made it home safely. Of course the first thing I did when I got home was throw them both in the bathtub. Poop and vomit, what a day!

Jory, I was wrong...

However...it's not exactly modified like you were describing. They still don't sound like real drums, they sound just like the Rockband drums so technically I'm not wrong. :) Love you!

Letters from the inbox Part 3

Email #1:

I recently took medical tests for employment. I aparently failed the Indurance test. I am very dissapointed, I happen to be in very good shape, I was simply just geting over a severe cold and have been unemployed for one month. so forgive me if i was a little on the week side. I am sure your company spent quite abit of money to have me take this test. It was unfortunate for the both of us. I feel the test does not show my ability. I promise i could run circles around anyone else in this industry.

Hey John Doe,

I'm sick of reading these stories

"Kastigar said Kurz was driving his girlfriend, Samantha Womble, 18, to work on the northwest side of Tucson Monday afternoon. "They had been bickering," Kastigar said. "He dropped her off and returned home to his trailer in Catalina."

Kastigar said Kurz told deputies he saw the front door of his trailer ajar. "He went inside and in his state of mind after quarreling forgot about the baby in the car," Kastigar said. Kastigar said the baby, Adryan Womble-Kurz, was left in the car for at least three hours, between 1 and 4 p.m. The body temperature of the boy was 106 degrees when he was rushed to Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley. Doctors there pronounced him dead, Kastigar said.

"The temperature in Tucson yesterday was in the mid-70s," Kastigar said. "We're testing the vehicle to see what temperature it was."

Kurz was being held without bail pending an initial court appearance. Kastigar said the investigation into the baby's death is continuing."

They should lock this fucker in a car in the middle of the desert until he dies! If you aren't prepared to be a parent, give your baby to someone who is!

Bad Bad Dreams

There I go thinking I had over come it or at least had layed it to rest. Then I go and have nightmares all night. I woke up this morning very sad. Confused and scared at first but then Sad because I'm positive it has everything to do with the treatments combined with the fear of a child from a past I wish I could delete. I'm sorry. I'm certain I know what triggered them. Don't stop. Just understand. We climbed the last mountain yesterday, it's all down hill (in a good way) from here. There goes that damn phone again. ARGH! Those pigeons are going to be sorry tonight!

Custom Closets by Joey

The one thing that Arizona is lacking is storage in your home. It seems silly to think that an entire state has something against storage, but from my experience (at least within the Greater Phoenix Metro area) this is the case.

First, very few homes have basements. I still don't accept the answer I've been given as to WHY in the hottest place on earth you wouldn't build a home with a basement to hide out in during those hellacious summer months. They say it's because the ground is too hard, BULLSHIT! So you'd think that since they aren't putting in a basement that they'd supply at the very least adequate storage if not an abundance of, but they DON'T!

For example, in our first house in Utah, obviously we had a basement with a storage area the size of our living room, dining room and kitchen put together, it was HUGE! We also had a large coat closet in the entry way of our house, the size of a standard bedroom closet. We had a large hall closet with custom shelves. We had a linen closet. And of course the standard bedroom closets and a good size walk in closet in the master. Not to mention the giant garage with super high ceilings OH And the 2 huge pantries in the kitchen....GAWD I miss the storage space!!!

Anyway so in our house now, we have what is considered a large 2 car garage to Phoenicians. Most houses here have a "1 and a half" car garage and rarely do they park in their garage because their one car can't fit with all their storage stuff! We'll actually be able to fit both our cars in our garage, but with the low ceiling we have no option to store stuff up high. We will be building some shelving in the garage, but that is down the line sometime.

In this house we have closets in every room, but no coat, hall, pantry or linen closets at all! We've purchased huge bookshelves for the living room, office and guest bedroom to provide more places for our stuff. I've already filled two of them, we haven't put together the one in the office yet but it will be filled as soon as it's up! I guess maybe we need to get rid of some stuff?

Anyway...the point to this really long and lame post is two weekends ago I came up with an excellent idea for our closet. We had purchased Q-Bits (modular furniture) from Target several years ago and had used them as a dresser of sorts. I previously had them stacked 3 high on either side of the TV in our bedroom but it made it quite difficult to plug and unplug the PS3 when I wanted to move it back and forth from the living room.

So here's is our new Custom Closet by me.

The bottom shelves are perfect for towels and sheets.

We still have plenty of room to stack jeans or whatever on top.

AND
In case you were wondering what was glowing in the back of our closet, here's a close up:

Two almost identical pair of shoes with 3 inch soles. One is blue patent leather and the other is purple suede, both with reflector stripes. Kool eh? I got them in Las Vegas 13 or so years ago on sale for $20 each, down from $80. I guess you'd call them Raver Shoes.

Anyway....Slowly but surely we'll get unpacked and decorated. It's much easier when you have grown up furniture...we need to buy a bedroom set OH SPEAKING OF we got a new KING size bed!

And in case you're wondering what's on the left side of the bed, behind the fan? Those are the dog kennels. Jimi sleeps in one every night (Mazzy sleeps with us, she always has) and they are both kenneled during the day because they like to PISS and SHIT everywhere.
